I was reading my friend Jackie's spiel on geography and I just remembered a funny thing that happened to me while I was in St. Louis. (I suggest you read her blog first...hahaha)
(Background: I took an 18-month internship at the St. Louis Marriott Pavilion a few years back. I worked in the F & B department as a supervisor, mostly shuttled between the restaurant, room service, patio bar, and Starbucks. It was a lot of work...but FUN. It had its moments, but in general, I think it helped me grow.)
Here's a rough account of the conversation with a guest at the hotel (this was during the first months when we were going through the training process...Being a server is a humbling experience!):
Guest: Oh wow, so you're an intern?! How long have you been here?
Me: Just a few months.
Guest: Great, so I see you're from the Philippines...
Me: Uh-huh (impressed pa naman ako that he knew the Philippines)
Guest: Yeah...so like, that's in South America, right?
Me: Uh...no...it's in Asia.
Guest: Oh, yeah, yeah...Asia......
Me: Um...so, what can I get you tonight? Would you like to start out with a drink?
So much for being impressed....hay!
So yeah, Jackie...I know what you mean!!!!

You'd be surprised how many Americans don't know anything about the world outside of the US. A white American friend of mine once said and I quote, We Americans are spoiled. We sometimes think that the world revolves around us or we sometimes forget that America is just a one of the countries on earth. Some us even think that America is the world. Unquote. I think he meant that both literally and figuratively. So go figure...
jackie: oo nga noh, parang food...dapat yata you change your name to dessertjaki. bwehehe
cris: i know what you mean! and it's pretty big of your friend to actually admit that. gotta at least give him that credit!
