Pinoy tidbits

  • The other day, my adviser set the paper on my desk with a post-it saying that I may be interested to read the article she highlighted. It was about Cristeta Comerford, the first female executive chef at the White House...who just happens to be Filipino:) I think that's awesome. I'm sure the article and similar ones have made the rounds on email chains around the world.

  • Tonight, John and I watched Rock Star INXS. I gotta admit I think I'm hooked. Well, mostly because of MiG Ayesa, who is Filipino by ancestry. Well, out of curiosity, I googled him and came across his blog. I started reading and I must say I like the way he writes...very candid. Here is an excerpt that made me smile: "The neat thing I did was to choose the song "LOLA." It wasn’t even my top 5 choices, but if it meant that next week I will be able to choose ANY song, then I am happy for the trade. "LOLA" is a classic, but I've worked out a new arrangement with the House band. "LOLA" also means 'Grandmother' in Tagalog, so this song is dedicated to my 'Gigi,' who was my 'LOLA' and to celebrate my Filipino connection. I just need to make it work, show spontaneity and survive this coming week's elimination show." He totally rocks and his voice is golden. Great charisma, too! Talent, talent, talent! I hope he goes far in this competition. I think it will be down to a showdown between him and Jordis. That would be a great finale to watch!
Amidst all the crazy and negative publicity we hear about the state of the Philippines now, it's nice to hear of Filipinos who triumph and highlight the more positive side. There is hope.
