Yesterday, I had the chance to meet Jorge Cham, the author of PhD. K-State was part of his campus tour for his awesome strip. Any grad student, regardless of program, university, gender, age [insert all other demographics here] can relate to his talk, "The Power of Procrastination." He had a theatre full of grad students laughing for an hour. Heck, even the Dean and Associate Dean of the Graduate School were cracking up--I suppose they remember how it felt to be in Grad School:)--all those YEARS ago... hahahahahaha...They realize that nothing much has changed, really.
I also had the opportunity to sit down at lunch with him (perks of working AT the Graduate School and being active with the Graduate Student Council...hehehehe). He carries a conversation well, no matter what the topic is. I'm glad that the success of his comic strip hasn't given him any airs. And even if he has graduated and survived his PhD (He's a professor at Caltech), he doesn't lord it over anyone (not to say that ALL professors are like that...but there are SOME...I guess it's sweet revenge for them! hahahaha). But seriously, Jorge Cham is so personable, down-to-earth, and just so funny.
I had to jet to a meeting right after his talk so I wasn't able to go to the reception. I dropped by afterwards, hoping to purchase his book, but it was SOLD out. We were surprised at how many grad students came to the affair--and how many stayed to talk to him and purchase the book. For a while we were afraid it was gonna bomb, but I guess this means we just might be inviting him back. I told him I'll buy the book off his website--with his autograph:) hahahaha.
So to give you a sampler, here are some of the strips I love:)
